How Much Does Brake Pad Replacement Cost in Perth

What's included in a brake service

Here at Tech 2 You Autocare, a brake service covers more than just swapping the pads.

We inspect the rotors while we're in there. We check the caliper slide pins. We test the brake fluid for moisture content. Brake fluid absorbs water over time, which lowers its boiling point and reduces stopping power under heavy braking. Most manufacturers recommend replacing it every two years. Bendix has a detailed explainer on this.

A complete brake service includes:

* New pads (front axle, rear axle, or both depending on wear)

* Rotor inspection and measurement (replacement quoted if they're under minimum thickness)

* Caliper slide pin clean and lubrication

* Brake fluid moisture test and flush if needed

How much does it cost in Perth?

Brake service (pads, rotor check, fluid flush) — From $220

Full logbook service including brake inspection — From $350

Diagnostics (if the problem is unclear) — From $210

These are our rates. Independent mechanics across Perth are in a similar range. The final price depends on how many axles need work and whether the rotors can be saved.

What affects the price?

How worn the pads are. In our opinion a rotor that has been machined too many times is far worse than just spending a little extra and getting the rotors replaced. Pads worn through to the backing plate means the rotors are likely scored and may need replacing rather than machining.

Front axle, rear axle, or both. Depending on the vehicle's size and weight, sometimes the rear pads wear out just as quick as the front pads. Front pads wear faster than rears on most cars because the weight shifts forward under braking.

Vehicle type. European cars and performance vehicles use larger rotors and specific pad compounds. Parts cost more. Labour is the same.

Parts quality. We use OEM-spec parts. Not the cheapest aftermarket option, not dealer-marked-up OEM stock. The compound and metallurgy are what matter.

Dealer vs independent mechanic

Dealers charge 40–60% more than independents for the same brake job. The pads are the same spec. The rotors are the same spec. What you're paying for is the waiting room.

Under Australian consumer law, using an independent mechanic for any repair doesn't affect your new car warranty, as long as the correct parts are used and the work is documented. The ACCC confirms this. The ACCC confirms this.

When not to wait

If you hear squealing under light braking, that's the wear indicator. Book it soon. It's doing its job.

If you hear grinding under any braking, that's metal on metal. The rotors may already be damaged.

If the pedal is soft or goes further than usual before it bites, that's a hydraulic issue. Don't sit on that one.

We come to you anywhere from Butler to Rockingham and across to the Hills. If the job needs a hoist, such as rear drum work or a handbrake cable, we'll tell you upfront. Most brake pad replacements don't.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does brake pad replacement take?

A: A standard brake service takes 1–2 hours on site. If rotors need replacing, add time. We give you an estimate when you book.

Q: Can a mobile mechanic replace brake pads?

A: Yes. We carry pads, rotors, fluid, and the tools to complete a full brake service at your home or workplace. It's one of the most common jobs we do. A whole workshop in a van.

Q: How do I know if my brake pads need replacing?

A: Squealing under light braking usually means the wear indicator is making contact. Grinding means they're already gone. If you're unsure, book a diagnostic and we'll check.

Q: Does the price include rotors?

A: The starting price covers pads, rotor inspection, and fluid test. If rotors need replacement, that's quoted separately on inspection. We won't start additional work without telling you the cost first.

Q: How often should brake pads be replaced?

A: Most cars go 30,000–70,000 km per set. Perth's stop-start traffic wears them faster than highway driving. We check brake wear at every logbook service.
